The 45th FV birthday party was held on April 5-6, 2008 in Roebling Road. The weather for Saturday was terrential rains, and then Sunday came with some blue, clouds but no rain. There were some 160 cars between the groups and Sunday's racing proved to be well worth the trip for everyone.
The Crafts, with their Formcar and Wanda Cecil who drove Hyler's Beach 5C which my very dear friend Maryann Kanyuk once owned. They had fun and were able to start their main race, side by side.
The Beach 5C of Keith Treseder, all the way to Roebling from Colorado. I met Keith Friday night and we struck up a real nice conversation. He came out looking for contacts for his Beach, body molds, etc. I told him to seek out Hyler, as he and I shared molds for our cars about 12 years ago and he would be a wealth of knowledge. As I found out later from Keith, the two did get together and now both have new friends and stories to share. Keith ran in the Historic group and finished 5th next to his paddock buddy who finished 4th.
Next was our contingent from Northern California. I met these guys while they were standing in the food line at the Saturday social. What an interesting group of guys, they were very appreciative of the workers, couldn't say enough good things and how important they are. The number 13 was also the class of his field and went on to win his race on Sunday. I told our guys on Saturday it was very evident he had sat in that car before this weekend.
The Formcar of Charlie Wilson, long time special friend out of Florida, a founding member of the Salt'nPepper Racing Team. The S'nP team comprised Charlie, Jeff Marlowe, Bob Mulligan, Walt McCarthy, Steve Matlock and 4 time National Champ George Fizell... It was my aspirational dream once I met these guys to be inducted into the team but circumstances prevented that from happening, but everyone of them are lifelong dear friends that made my own Vee driving experiences more than I could ever have done on my own. Charlie did good, had fun, and brought he and the car home safe..... Great job Charlie, and it was very special to see you, Jeff, George and Walt again.... Another weekend made by your team.....
The NCR's Lee Wagner, with the Vee of Shannon Jones paddocked together. Both Lee and Shannon raced successfully to get into the big show, and moved up very respectfully in the field during the Brundage. I didn't get a chance to run them down after the race, but I suspect there were smiles. I was fortunate to share the banquest with them Saturday evening and we shared war stories, laughs and a couple of pops... Thanks for the survivor run Shannon..
Top left, one of if not the most famous paddock space in any FV weekend, the Nobles. Bill, 5 time National Champion, and his wife Lisa, are as gracious today as ever. They even raffled off a Noble engine for one lucky driver to win on Sunday, now that's a birthday present.
And finally, the most unfortunate and serious incident of the weekend came in the first heat race for the Brundage. The 05 car of James Vaseff tried to avoid 2 other spinning Vees, and was caught up as victim in this hard hitting rollover. The car ended upright, to his advantage, however as all cars cleared and I responded it was clear he was not all there. I immediately signaled for an ambulance, and in 15 seconds or so James came around but it was clear he wasn't. The ambulance staff did an excellent job from arrival to departure, and as it turned out James was transported. Best to you James, I will be looking to see you back real soon.
